Yamaha i88X mLAN Audio/MIDI Interface
Integrated Multi Audio I/O and MIDI I/O System for Computer Music Production

What is the i88X?
The i88X is an mLAN-based Audio and MIDI interface which features 2 mic and 6 line inputs that deliver pristine audio signal to the unit’s precision 24-bit/96kHz A/D converters. Built-in ADAT Light Pipe compatibility and SPDIF I/O allows for 18 simultaneous inputs and outputs.

The i88X can be used as a stand-alone 18-channel computer I/O, or as an expansion device in an mLAN network. Because the i88X is mLAN compatible, users get the added benefits of integration with over 40 mLAN licensee company products including the Yamaha 01X.

The first 2 input channels feature extremely high performance head amplifiers with phantom power and insert points. These head amps were designed by the same engineers who developed Yamaha’s acclaimed DM2000 and 02R96 digital mixing consoles, and are the result of years of research and input from world-class engineers and producers. Each head amp delivers transparent sound performance that rivals—and in many cases exceeds—that of the most expensive component microphone preamps.

Key Features

  • 2 DM2000 Quality Mic Preamps with Inserts
  • 6 Line inputs
  • 24bit/96kHz Audio Interface
  • Balanced Inputs and Outputs
  • ADAT I/O supporting 96kHz
  • 18 simultaneous channels
(8 analogue, 8 ADAT & SPDIF (coax) or Stereo Optical)
  • OS9/OSX/XP Drivers support
  • Portable 1 Unit Rack

Features

Fast data transfer via mLAN
Connecting the i88X to a computer and other mLAN devices via IEEE1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) cables
enables you to transfer multi-channel audio data and multi-port MIDI signals to and from a computer-
based DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and connected mLAN devices (at a transfer rate of
400Mbps [S400]).

Up to 18 audio channel I/O
The i88X features 2 MIC/LINE inputs and 6 LINE inputs. Inputs 1 and 2 feature 2 sonically
transparent mic preamps (derived from DM2000) and phantom power, and accept both XLR
and TRS phone plugs. Inputs 3-8 accept TRS phone plugs

Input 1 also features a HI-Z (high impedance) jack to connect high-impedance instruments, such
as guitar or bass (page 8).

The Insert I/O jacks enable you to connect an external effects processor

The i88X also features a sampling rate converter that supports sampling frequencies from
44.1 kHz through 96 kHz.

It also features coaxial DIGITAL STEREO IN and OUT jacks and the
optical IN and OUT jacks that are switchable between STEREO and ADAT.

The MIDI IN and OUT ports enable you to connect external MIDI devices in the mLAN system

The i88X can process up to 18-channel input and output data when running at a sampling frequency
of 48 kHz or 44.1 kHz, and up to 14-channel input and output data when running at a
sampling frequency of 96 kHz or 88.2 kHz.

Total Expansion
Being based on mLAN, The Yamaha i88X can be expanded, meaning that the system can grow with your needs. Add a Yamaha 01X or more i88X's to give you more channels etc. Future proofing has never been this easy.

Total Network
The Yamaha i88X features Yamaha's next generation mLAN technology. Offering high speed audio and MIDI networking between computers, synthesisers and other mLAN compatible products,

As Yamaha's mLAN technology is based on the industry standard IEEE1394 (FireWire) buss, connecting up your Yamaha i88X is as simple as plugging in a single cable. Perfect for any environment, the Yamaha i88X is as happy connected to a laptop as to a desktop computer.

mLAN being a true network, and not just a point to point connection system, allows for up to 63 mLAN compatible devices to be linked together.

And with mLAN using a single cable to send multichannel audio and MIDI, you need never have to worry about opening up your computer, fiddling with messy IRQ's or wrestling with awkward set-up configurations. Yamaha i88X means you just literally plug in and play.

The following diagram illustrates a typical connection example.

Total Software Support
Unlike other solutions on the market, there is no need to switch to one specific application just to get the full benefit of Yamaha i88X. With low latency 24-bit 96kHz audio driver support for Windows XP and Mac OS9/OSX computers as well as full MIDI capability, the i88X slip's into your existing working environment with absolute ease.

Bundled with the Yamaha i88X is a professional suite of user interface control software and commercially available VST effects plug ins (over £400 worth Pitch Fix, Vocal Rack and Final Master) to enhance even further your experience of working with one of the most powerful computer audio product ever conceived.

APPLICATIONS
The Yamaha i88X as an audio/MIDI I/O interface is the ideal solution for delivering the best from your music and audio applications including: Cakewalk SONAR, SONAR 2, SONAR 3, Cakewalk Pro Audio, Guitar Tracks Pro, Home Studio, Steinberg Cubase VST, Cubase SX, Cubase SL, Cubase SE, Nuendo, Wavelab, Emagic Logic Audio, Adobe Audition, Syntrillium Cool Edit Pro, Cool Edit Pro 2, Sonic Foundry Sound Forge, Acid, Samplitude, GigaStudio, Propellerheads Reason, Ableton Live, Image Line FL Studio (Fruityloops) and other multitrack music software.

mLAN EXPLAINED

One Cable. One Network. Get Connected.

mLAN is the integration of audio and MIDI bi-directional transfer over a single FireWire (IEEE 1394) cable. Up to 63 mLAN compatible products may be connected together in any order, and as mLAN ports are hot-pluggable, there is no need to power-down or reset any devices. mLAN is extremely useful in computer-based music production, although compatible products may be connected together without a computer - ideal for live performance situations. The format is supported by Windows XP and at OS level for Mac OSX platforms. There are also ASIO and WDM multiclient drivers available for the PC platform. Although mLAN has been developed by Yamaha, over 40 other manufacturers have signed on as licensees, many with products already in the market. mLAN in detail PDF
