Step 1

Pick A Groove
The Groove Picker is where music creation begins. Begin by clicking on one of the groove buttons to select what groove you want to hear or work on. Clicking A, B, C, or D displays a different set of 16 grooves, allowing you to create up to 64 Grooves in a session.

The Groove Picker also has its own transport (the Play, Rewind, and Jog buttons), which is separate from the Song Arranger's transport. This allows you to audition and tweak individual grooves to perfection before arranging them into a song.

Step 2

Mix It Up
Once you've selected a groove, the next step is to mix it so that you hear only the parts you want to hear. Kinetic's Part Mixer is a 16 channel mixer, one channel for each instrument in your song. Mixer settings can can change, depending on what groove you have selected. For example, in groove A1, you may wish to hear only the drums, so you would solo that drums channel.

The Part Mixer is also the method by which you can select which part you wish to edit. The selected part becomes highlighted in blue. Once a part is selected, you can adjust settings in the Part Editor below, and modify its current pattern or instrument.

Step 3

Choose Your Parts
While mixing your different grooves, you may discover that you'd like to modify some of the patterns, or change the timbres of the instruments in your project.

The Part Editor is where you define the character of each of your 16 parts. A part is comprised of one pattern and one instrument. Therefore you are presented with two browsers: one for Patterns and one for Patches. You can keep things simple and just use the browsers, but Kinetic also lets you take things to a deeper level if you really like to dig in.

Use the Part Editor's sidebar to access a deeper level of control so you can tailor your patterns and sounds to perfection.

Follow Your Own Drummer
Kinetic's Pattern Editor displays an editable piano-roll style interface. You can paint in your own notes, drum rhythms, even draw in automation changes like volume and pan.

If you have a MIDI controller, you can record your rhythms and melodies directly into the Pattern Editor in real-time or step-time.

Define Your Voice
Kinetic's Patch Editor lets you tweak the individual nuances of your sound. The silver knobs control the most important characteristics of the synth sound, but if you want even more control, click on the small synth icon to launch the instrument in a separate window.

Just below the synth controls is the audio effects bin. This is where you can apply different studio effects (such as chorus, reverb, echo) to your instruments, to create a truly custom and professional sound.

Step 4

Arrange Your Song
Kinetic makes song arranging easier than ever. When you are ready to begin arranging your grooves, simply select a groove with the Paint tool, then click and drag in the arrangement view.

Grooves are clearly identified in the Song Arranger, so you can tell at a glance what's happening in your project.
