Quite simply, this tool has been transformed. Create music the way you do with paper and pencil – writing all the music as you go with one utensil. It is all the function of Simple Note as you knew it, plus the power of Speedy Note Entry, with additional control. It may become the way you get most things done in Finale.
Click notes onto the staff or use MIDI to indicate pitch. Or input notes with the numeric pad and keys ‘A’ ‘B’ ‘C’ ‘D’ ‘E’ ‘F’ and ‘G.’ Change octave. Enter rests. Add accidentals. Add notes in a chord to an existing note. Create triplets. Now add grace notes. Break and join beams.
But entering notes is just the start. Enter articulations on the fly or ‘lock-in’ an articulation to place on several notes. Change the key or time signature simply with key commands. Flip enharmonics, add expressions and flip ties. Re-pitch existing notes, regardless of their durations, using any of the note-entry methods to re-pitch these rhythms. Change layers or create multiple voice lines on the staff as you write or edit.
Keystrokes are intuitive and a special key map for laptop users is provided. Best of all, if you prefer certain key commands, change the defaults in Finale to whatever you like.
No other notation program offers scanning as accurate as Finale, with its included SmartScore® Lite by Musitek®. Includes:
Secondary voice recognition - counterpoint
Correct transposed instrument recognition
Multiple page scans
Correct page formatting including system and staff sizes
Up to 32nd note resolution
New to Finale 2006 — SmartScore Lite now recognizes grayscale images, simplifying the use of scanners, including HP models that save in this format.
Scanning is brought right to your fingertips in the new Launch Window. What's more, Windows users can now scan directly from Finale, and Finale determines the ideal resolution and color depth.
And Finale now imports scanned SmartScore 3.0 and SharpEye files, capturing notes, text, lyrics, chord symbols and more! (Currently Windows only. Uses FREE Music XML Lite plug-in to convert SharpEye files.)
Take a look for yourself.
Here's the original:
Scanned into Finale: Only 5 easy edits needed.
Another notation product using PhotoScore Lite™: 30 difficult edits needed:
These examples were scanned from original engraved music (no photocopies), using a Canon N670U scanner at 360 dpi. The scan for SmartScore Lite was a line art (black and white) tiff file, and the scan for Photoscore Lite was a grey scale, the preferred file type for Photoscore. Both images were untouched to enhance results. The Photoscore example was transferred, without edits, to the most current version of a competitor's product. The time to correct errors in the two examples- Finale, 10 seconds to add missing rests and tie necessary notes, hence the term 'easy edits' compared to the 2 minutes it took to add voice 2 notes, correct notes, change notes from voice 1 to 2 etc in the competitor's product, thus the term 'difficult' or time consuming edits.
Require more advanced scanning take a look at Sharpeye for Windows.
Hyperscribe
Notate as you play a MIDI keyboard — even record continuous data including the sustain pedal.
This revolutionary technology allows you to enter notation into Finale simply by playing your brass or woodwind instrument. Finale’s new generation of MicNotator is now much more accurate and even easier than ever before. Pick up your clarinet and start making music!
The example below is an unedited flute solo line played in at 90 bpm.

Creating custom drum parts has never been easier. Select any region and apply a pre-created drum groove in the style and feel you want.
You can add to the list of available styles by placing any MIDI file into the Drum Groove folder. The plug-in intelligently copies only the drum and percussion information.
Smart Cue Notes
Never miss an entrance - Smart Cue Notes.

Finale Performance Assessment:
Imagine creating a Finale file for your students. Your students open the file in a downloadable shareware application called Finale Performance Assessment, or FPA. Here they practice the music - adjusting the tempo, even hearing how it is supposed to be played, playing it over and over until ready for a performance - and are automatically recorded in a file they can save to disk for their portfolio, or email to you, their family, or friends. What's more, their performance is assessed on-screen: notes they played correctly appear in green and incorrect notes appear in red. FPA is now a reality for MIDI keyboard, woodwind and brass players!
Create and save a Finale file for Performance assessment. The FPA Wizard walks you through and checks your work.
Students test themselves by performing the music in our freeware FPA application.
They can adjust the tempo, hear how it is supposed to be played and click on notes for fingering charts.
Also available are sample files for use with FPA. If you've installed Finale 2005 (which can create additional FPA files) you have already installed FPA and these sample files.
FPA records the performance. Activating the assessment feature overlays correctly played notes in green (incorrect notes in red) onto the existing notation — providing a detailed view of strengths and weak points.
FPA will even grade the performance — indicating how many correct notes out of all possible notes and the percentage of correct notes played.
Save to a disc — scores, recordings and notation screen shots for a portfolio or e-mailed to teachers, family or friends.
FPA can even assess polyphonic keyboard music.
FPA Samples — Ready to use!
Chromatic scale for 11 instruments
Rhythm exercises for 12 instruments, including MIDI keyboard
MIDI keyboard exercises – 3 each for year 1, 2 & 3 students

Engraver Tuplets & Spacing Controls
Engraver Tuplets
Take control of tuplets with Finale's new Engraver Tuplets. Default positioning looks great, even when the tuplet begins with rests, and tuplets now automatically reposition when notes are raised or lowered on the staff. Tuplet brackets avoid rests and staff lines. Brackets follow the angle of the stems when on stem side and follow the angle of notes when on the note side.
It's automatic!
More tuplet position options:
Center tuplet number metrically or linearly within tuplet group.
Bracket can extend over full duration of notes or just notes themselves.
Placement options for Beam/Stem side and Above/Below staff.
Specify flat tuplet brackets.
Brackets flip when dragged across staff midline.
Display ratio in multiple forms and ratio + note duration.
Spacing Controls
Take control of "before music" and "after music" space on a
measure-by-measure level.
Specify space between clef and key, key and time, and clef and time.
Additional"before music" space at beginning of staff system and for notes
with accidentals.

Grace Note Spacing
Do you work with multiple grace notes?
You can now specify the minimum distance between grace notes in Music Spacing Options.
Manual grace note positioning can now be retained after music spacing.
Improved user interface affecting grace notes and music spacing in
Document Options.
Create quizzes, textbooks or worksheets by exporting music into word-processing software. Finale allows you to save as TIFF. Macs can also save as PICT or EPS.
Finale can handle notation for an amazing array of fretted instruments.
Enter notes directly into TAB staves using a mouse, computer keyboard, or MIDI device. Or copy from a companion Standard Notation Staff to a TAB staff and vice-versa. Specify the lowest fret to use as you paste.
Once the music is in the tab staff, it is incredibly easy and intuitive to edit. For example, to change a fret number from '2' to '3', just select the note and type '3'.
Up and Down arrow keys move a selected number to other strings. Numbers appear in orange when out of fret range.
Finale handling of stems in tablature is unequaled in ease and power. Various stem styles are easily applied. Use the "Tab Styles" library that comes with Finale or create your own.
Bends and shapes automatically convert when you paste between Standard and TAB staves.
Notating hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends and releases is a breeze.
User-defined defaults for guitar bends are standard.
Custom Smart Shapes now contain an expanded list of guitar-specific lines.
Bends can effortlessly do stair steps and double bends.
