Cool Edit Pro's Noise Reduction Filter

Cool Edit Pro: How to use Cool Edit Pro's Noise Reduction filter

  • Load your file.
  • Select at least a half second of the file (one with ONLY the noise and no foreground audio).
  • Select / Transform / Noise Reduction.
  • Click on Get noise profile and save the profile.
  • Set Noise Level to desired level (medium usually).
  • Click on "Get noise profile" and save the profile.
  • Close the Noise reduction window.
  • Now Select the entire file.
  • Go back to / Transform / Noise Reduction.
  • Click on OK to perform the noise reduction.

NOTE:
Noise reduction can introduce unwanted artifacts with increasing intensity as you try to reduce more noise or if you start with a very weak foreground signal. Try to select as long a sample as you can (1/2 second or more) with _no_ foreground audio to create the noise profile with Set Noise Level. Also, if the artifacts are too prominent, try lowering the Noise Reduction Level.
