Cool Edit Pro: How to eliminate dropouts, skipping, or similar problems in record or playback

• In Options > Settings > System, change the Total Buffer size X seconds using Y buffers. Try the following settings in place of X and Y.
  • X=8 Y=12
  • X=1 Y=12
  • X=1 Y=4
  • X=4 Y=4

  These settings are different for each sound card. You can change these number to find the best settings for your sound card. You can use any combination of numbers between 1 and 12.

• In Options > Settings > System, Set the Wave Cache size to the following (based on amount of RAM).

  16 MB -- 2048
  32 MB -- 4096
  64 MB -- 8192
  120 MB -- 16384

• Add or update the line in CONFIG.SYS to read "STACKS=16,512"
  
  
• For Windows 95, add the following line to the SYSTEM.INI file (16meg systems use 2048, and 8meg systems use 1024):

  [vcache]
  MinFileCache=4096
  MaxFileCache=4096

• Check to make sure that if your hard drive (the one pointed to by the Temp Directory setting in Cool Edit) requires a DMA or IRQ setting, that it is not somehow conflicting with that of your sound card. This is common for digital I/O cards and SCSI drives.
  
  
• If your sound card has a choice for "Single Mode DMA", do not enable this item.
  
  
• Enable the DMA function on your hard drive. Right click My Computer, then click properties, then the device manager tab, Then open disk drives and double click your drive that says DISK TYPE 47, click the settings tab, and put a check mark in the DMA box. You will then receive a warning......just click ok to the warning... and that should fix that problem. You may have to reboot your machine for this to take effect.
  
  
• In Windows 95, set the hard disk priority to "Network Server" and caching to 32K lookahead (not the default 64K) in Control Panel-System-Performance-File System.
