Error 018 during install

Cool Edit Pro: Error 018 during installation of Cool Edit Pro 1.0

The problem is most likely caused by your CD-Rom drive not being able to read long file names. If you have installed your CD-Rom drivers through DOS instead of Windows, this could cause the problem. Check your CD-Rom drive manual to see how to install it correctly so that it can read long filenames.

In most cases, all you have to do is to place REM in front of the lines that relate to loading your CD-Rom drive in Config.sys and autoexec.bat. Usually after doing this and rebooting your machine, Windows will detect your CD-Rom as new hardware and will install the correct windows drivers for you. If it does not, you can use the "Add new hardware" in the control panel to make windows look for the CD-Rom Drive.

You might also want to contact your CD-Rom Manufacturer on how to add support for long file names or how to correctly install Windows drivers.

Also, if you:

  1. Right Click on "My Computer" (located on your desktop)
  2. Get properties
  3. Device Manager

You should have a section/heading that says "CD-Rom". You probably don't have this either since you are not loading your CD-Rom through windows. Once you fix your CD-rom to read long file name, you will be able to see "CD-Rom" under this section. You will then be able to install Cool Edit Pro without getting the Error 018 message.

Note: You must install Cool Edit Pro from the CD. If you have copied the setup to your hard disk, it will not run and will give your error 018.
